The Future Tenses
The future in English can be expressed in different ways depending on the situation, intention, or level of certainty. The most common forms are: will, be going to, and the present continuous.
⏰ When do we use the Future Tenses?
We use future tenses to:
-
Make spontaneous decisions or promises (will):
- I will call you tomorrow.
- I’ll help you with that.
-
Talk about planned actions or evidence-based predictions (be going to):
- It’s going to rain.
- We are going to visit Paris this summer.
-
Describe fixed arrangements (present continuous):
- I’m meeting my friend at 5 PM.
- We’re flying to New York next Friday.
📌 Structure
- Will:
Subject + will + base verb - Be Going To:
Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb - Present Continuous:
Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
📝 Note
Use:
- “Will” for promises, offers, or spontaneous decisions.
- “Be going to” for plans or predictions based on evidence.
- “Present continuous” for fixed future arrangements.
Examples: I’ll answer the phone. It’s going to rain. I’m meeting Sarah tomorrow.
