Be Going To
We use “be going to” mainly for two important reasons: to talk about plans you already have and to make predictions based on what you can see or know now.
β° When do we use “Be Going To”?
We use “be going to” for the future to:
Talk about future plans and intentions (things you have already decided to do):
I am going to visit my grandparents next weekend. (This is my plan.)
She is going to start a new job next month. (She has decided this.)
Make predictions based on present evidence (what you see or know now):
Look at those dark clouds! It is going to rain. (You see the clouds, so you predict rain.)
He’s running very fast. He is going to win the race! (You see his speed, so you predict he will win.)
π Structure
“Be going to” always uses two parts: a form of the verb “to be” (am, is, are) and then “going to” + the base form of the main verb.
Question: Am/Is/Are + subject + going to + base verb?
Affirmative: Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb
Negative: Subject + am/is/are + not + going to + base verb
π Notes
Remember to use the correct form of “to be” (am/is/are) for each subject:
- I
am
- You/We/They
are
- He/She/It
is
Always use the base form of the verb after “going to” (no -s, -ed, or -ing).
In very informal spoken English, people sometimes say “gonna” instead of “going to,” but this is not for writing.
