The Past Simple

The Past Simple

The past simple is used to talk about actions or events that happened and finished in the past. It is one of the most common tenses in English for storytelling and daily conversations.

⏰ When do we use the Past Simple?

The past simple is used to describe completed actions or situations in the past, often with time expressions like yesterday, last week, in 2020, or an hour ago.

📌 Structure

  • Affirmative: Subject + past verb
  • Negative: Subject + did not + base verb
  • Question: Did + subject + base verb?

📝 Note

Regular verbs form the past simple by adding -ed.

    play → played

Irregular verbs have unique past forms.
